The Simpsons Season 21 Episode 10: Once Upon a Time In Springfield

Two things:

1. Wow, when I found out this episode is next to review, my reaction was "Oh no, what am I going to say about this?" Because this is a girly episode with lots of singing, but this is a new plot (sorta), and there's a B-plot. But anyways, will I write a good review? Let's find out.

2. Fun Fact: When this first aired, this got 21 million viewers, but this was inflated because of the NFL playoffs. Still pretty high though, eh?

Krusty the Clown's TV Show introduces a new character named Princess Penelope. Her act features singing, glitter, and a unicorn, immediately attracting a youthful female audience, but disgusts the male audience, even Krusty himself. Soon, the Krustylu Studio becomes almost completely filled with girls, and all of Krusty's merchandise is replaced by that of Penelope's.

Bart does not like it and demands that Krusty do something in order to restore the show. Krusty confronts Penelope in her dressing room, but Penelope admits she has followed Krusty ever since she was a young girl, They share a mutual attraction towards one another. Later  episodes of The Krusty the Clown Show feature the two singing love songs to one another, which then has Krusty propose to Penelope and she accepts.

On the wedding day, Bart and Milhouse sabotage the marriage by showing Penelope Krusty's former wives. Penelope still wants to get married, but Krusty decides that he is not good enough for Penelope and cancels the wedding.

Penelope moves to France and sees Krusty is there and apologizes for leaving her. She accepts and the two float down the Seine River together into the night.

In the B-plot, Mr. Burns eliminates donuts from the lunch room, shocking HomerLenny, and Carl. At Moe's Tavern, a corporate recruiter offers them a job at the Capital City Nuclear Power Plant. The trio take a tour and discover there are luxurious working conditions, including free massagessushi, and cartoonist Gary Larson, who has come out of retirement to draw The Far Side cartoons for plant employees. They accept the offer.

But as Homer, Lenny, and Carl leave from Springfield Nuclear Power Plant, Mr. Burns confronts them. Burns offers to have better donuts if they return to work at his power plant. The trio then accepts the offer.

My thoughts:

How many times have I seen it: 3 times

Billboard Gag: The Fox network, still Sucking after 20 years. Lol. (B-)

Chalkboard Gag: The world may end in 2012 but this show won't. Remember that possible apocalypse? (A-)

The Simpsons are sperm and the couch is in an ovary, the Simpsons swim into the ovary and sit on the couch and a baby Mr Burns forms and says excellent. Really, Mr. Burns? (C+)

Storyline: Well, I liked it, there was some good characterization on Bart and Krusty. Decent songs. Good pacing. The story was somewhat original and unpredictable.
Penelope was a nice character, because she being a fan of Krusty's show during all her childhood was a good way to introduce her love for him. Krusty leaving her because she was the only woman he cared for was a pretty ironic. But I was PISSED when Krusty said no the Penelope. I was really hoping for a marriage, like in S25 E10 Married to the Blob, when Comic Book Guy married Kumiko.

About the songs and Bart/Milhouse's reactions: I LOVED their animations. They were good gags and they were funny to watch. My favourite one was Milhouse having a paper bag over himself. The songs were OK. People have different opinions if they like the Disney-themed princess show, and I can tolerate it. So whatever, I don't mind the songs.

The B-plot was fine, just some filler action, but it was simple, hilarious and lovely, and goes back to old Simpsons concepts such as donuts or the SNPP. Thought the resolution with "two donuts" was hilarious. It's just the kind of plan that Burns would try, and just the kind of stupid deal they'd accept. Funniest joke: "No!" "Do'h!" "Nuts!" (No doughnuts). I enjoyed the B-plot overall.

At the end, nothing too bad in the episode, but not excellent.

My grade: B/B+
